Introducing
The Insurance Women of Greater Cincinnati
A Brief Local History

The local chapter of the National Association of Insurance Women, International, had its beginning in February, 1942. Several days after the meeting of the Surety Managers Association in Columbus, Mr. Robert DeVore, Manager of the Cincinnati Branch of Hartford Accident & Indemnity Company asked Rose Schill if she knew of a Women’s Insurance Club in Cincinnati. He was somewhat interested as several members of the Columbus Women’s Club took part in the program that was arranged for the Surety Managers Association.

In June, 1942, the first meeting was held in the offices of Fidelity and Deposit Company, with about fifteen women attending. At this meeting, officers were elected and the name of Cincinnati Association of Insurance Women was adopted. The minutes of this organizational meeting are a matter of record. The originally chartered local association used that name until the late 1980’s when the membership voted to change in order to identify and incorporate all suburban areas of the city.

As one of the local representatives of NAIW in the greater Cincinnati insurance community, we are actively pursuing the fulfillment of the three sides of our national emblem. We are providing educational opportunities to all who are interested. There is an atmosphere of fellowship among the membership, which is drawn from all phases of the property/risk management and life/health fields, and we endeavor to instill a sense of loyalty to our industry. The original purpose to educate insurance employees has grown to a very strong program throughout the entire organization. The nationally known public speaking course, Communicate with Confidence is a favorite. We offer other courses such as Rules of the Road (for better customer service), Mentors & Proteges’, and Leadership Development, to name a few. We also support the College of Insurance as well as Project InVest in public schools. Our members are involved in teaching the various Institute of America courses. Professional designations such as CPIW/M (Certified Professional Insurance Woman/Man) can be earned by being a member of NAIW and are recognized by the Industry as an indication of a commitment to professionalism.

The Cincinnati Chapter has always been active in the support of National objectives, such as being involved in the Drinking/Driving Awareness Program, working in the schools and local communities. Public relations in the area of legislative programs are supported through the Grass Roots Program. Also in the area of safety and community involvement, there is a Learn Not To Burn Program, aimed especially toward pre-school and elementary children.

Our Mission

Objective

The object of this Association shall be to promote insurance education, to support the professional advancement of its members, to cultivate fellowship within the Association, to strengthen loyalty to the industry and to promote membership.

History

Insurance Women of Greater Cincinnati is a local chapter of the National Association of Insurance Women International (NAIW) and part of the Ohio Council of NAIW. The Ohio Council of NAIW represents 19 local Ohio Associations as one of the four states in Region IV (Ohio, Kentucky Michigan and Indiana).

Insurance Women of Greater Cincinnati celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2003. The Association’s primary goals today are the same as they were 60 years ago—education, fellowship and loyalty.

Education

Persons joining NAIW and remaining a member for three years can earn the Certified Professional Insurance Woman (CPIW) or Certified Professional Insurance Man (CPIM) designation. Other qualifications include being in the industry for five years, completing an NAIW sponsored course and continued education in other programs such as CLU, CPCU, or INS.

Classes are held each year to enhance personal and professional development. Each fall, the local Speak-off is held for the Communicate with Confidence (CWC) graduates. The local winner then completes all the way to the national level by winning contests at the local, state and regional levels.

NAIW provides all members with a bi-monthly publication “Today’s Insurance Woman” and “NAIW-NOW.” Both contain information about the insurance industry on a national level and information about NAIW.

Fellowship

In addition to monthly meetings, there are opportunities to exchange information and enjoy fellowship with other members at seasonal outings, educational classes, state council meetings, regional conferences, and the national convention.

Networking

IWOGC meets the third Tuesday of every month except May, August and December. Most meetings include networking and dinner with the monthly business meeting following. There is a program each month directed toward a timely topic or current event concerning our industry. The May, August and December meetings are reserved for special NAIW events.
